Climate Partnership

Our commitment to sustainability

Commitment to the Environment

HSBC manages its environmental footprint by operating as efficiently as possible. It also finances some local conservation projects. At HSBC, we are committed to fighting climate change or global warming, which represents the single largest environmental, economic, and social challenge of this century.

HSBC Climate Partnership

The HSBC Group has been one of the world's pioneers in addressing climate change. In May 2007, HSBC Group launched the HSBC Climate Partnership: a five-year USD100 million partnership with The Climate Group, Earthwatch, The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). This amount has been the largest ever pledged to climate change, by a British Company. The HSBC Climate Partnership was started to combat the effects of climate change on people, forests, water and cities by inspiring action from individuals, businesses and governments worldwide.

To support this global effort, HSBC Philippines launched its own local campaign – The HSBC Climate Partnership: Red, White & Green. This project aimed to educate youth on climate change. It mobilized the HSBC workforce to become climate change champions, as seen through their efforts in reducing HSBC carbon emissions in the Philippines.

Volunteers for Nature

Together with the Children's Environmental Awareness and Action Foundation (CEAAF), HSBC volunteers conduct environmental awareness and marine conservation modules for children living in seaside communities. Yamang Dagat (Treasures of the Sea) storybooks developed by CEAAF are used to teach elementary school students about the Philippine marine life and show them how to protect their environment.

Climate Champions

In 2010, 525 employees were trained at Climate Champions at the five Earthwatch Regional Climate Centers across the globe, bringing HSBC Group's Climate Champions to 1,400. Working alongside leading scientists, these employees get to discover the issues and challenges surrounding climate change first hand. Climate Champions then apply the knowledge they've gained through this experience when they return to work, leading advocacies that aim to lower HSBC's environmental footprint.

HSBC Project ECO-Kids

Launched in 2008, HSBC Project ECO-Kids aims to inspire 3rd Grade public elementary school students to become advocates for the environment by incorporating environmental-friendly habits into their daily lives. The four-part module program has been endorsed by the Department of Education and is aligned with the government's plans to integrate climate change issues into the national curriculum.

To date, HSBC Project ECO-Kids has reached out to over 18,000 students in 61 schools across 11 cities. It has also engaged the participation of 50 educators and more than 1000 volunteers. This overwhelming response to the program reflects a high degree of success both in increasing awareness and effecting change in the community. Based on the diagnostic testing, the children's collective understanding of climate change shows significant improvement in their diagnostic tests and schools have voluntarily installed recycling bins and switched to CFL bulbs as a result of this heightened awareness.

Moving forward, HSBC Project ECO-Kids plans to work closely with calamity-prone areas around NCR such as Marikina, Pateros, Malabon, Pasig and Quezon City.
